Lipid-lowering efficacy of Amla (Emblica officinalis)

A study by Gopa et al evaluated the efficacy of Amla (Emblica officinalis) in patients with high fat levels and compared its fat-lowering effects with those of a well known pharmaceutical treatment.


Patients with plasma total cholesterol and low density lipoprotein level more than 240 mg% and 130 mg%, respectively, were selected for the trial.  Treatment with Amla produced significant reduction of Total cholesterol and  Lipids.  Amla produced significant reduction in blood pressure.

In conclusion, Amla produced significant lipid lowering effect along with a reduction in blood pressure.  Adding  Amla to current hypolipidemic therapy would offer significant protection against atherosclerosis and coronary artery disease, with reduction in the dose and adverse effects of the hypolipidemic agents.
