Liquorice: Anti-Tumour Properties

Liquiritigenin, a natural flavanone existing in glycyrrhiza species (Licorice – Liquorice), shows extensive biological activities, such as anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer properties.
In studies by Liu et al, liquiritigenin effectively inhibited the growth of tumors in animal model systems.
The expression and secretion of Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), that stimulates vasculogenesis and angiogenesis were down-regulated by the Liquorice component. Therefore, it is suggested that liquiritigenin can be further studied on cancer and other diseases associated with VEGF up-regulation.
