Green Tea: And What about other Herbs & Spices for Weight Control?

We saw in the previous article how Green Tea can help to control weight but what about other Herbs & Spices, and specifically those used in the InnOrbit Ayurvedic Natural Infusions.

Caralluma fimbriata

Caralluma fimbriata extract has received Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS) status for use as a nutraceutical to combat the most serious public health concern – obesity. This review by Dutt et al, revises the studies undertaken on the chemistry, pharmacology, and therapeutic potential of Caralluma.

Caralluma fimbriata is a succulent plant in the family Apocynaceae. It has been eaten in rural India for centuries.

The scientists concluded that key components – pregnane glycosides have appetite-suppressant properties and has opened the possibility of developing an anti-obesity/appetite-suppressant products. The main objective of this review was to evaluate studies undertaken on the plant in light of further research for anti-obesity drugs and nutraceuticals from Caralluma.

Ginger

A study by Mansour evaluated the effects of a hot ginger beverage on energy expenditure, feelings of appetite and satiety and metabolic risk factors in overweight men.

The results, showed enhanced thermogenesis and reduced feelings of hunger with ginger consumption, suggesting a potential role of ginger in weight management.

Garcinia cambogia

One promising botanical that may reduce food intake and body weight by is hydroxycitric acid (HCA) derived from Garcinia cambogia. Garcinia, a key ingredient of InnOrbit’s Slim&Fit health drink, was investigated by Anton, Shuster and Leeuwenburgh of the University of Florida.

It is thought that Garcinia can affect neuroendocrine pathways that control satiety or “fullness”.

Neuroendocrine cells (neurosecretory cells) are cells that receive neuronal input (neurotransmitters released by nerve cells) and, as a consequence of this input, release message molecules (hormones) into the blood. In this way they bring about an integration between the nervous system and the endocrine system. The endocrine system is the system of glands, which secretes a hormone into the bloodstream to regulate the body. Appetite and satiety is controlled through this system.

Of the numerous botanical compounds, Garcinia cambogia-derived hydroxycitric acid was selected for testing in the present study because of its potential to safely reduce food intake, body weight, and oxidative stress levels. We have already seen here that ingredients like Garcinia have been used by local populations in India to keep the going through the day without overeating and our Ayurveda doctors have backed this up.

Hibiscus

In a clinical trail, Hibiscus was shown to lower triglycerides – triglycerides are a mechanism for storing unused calories, and their high concentrations in blood correlates with the consumption of starchy and fatty foods.
