Anti-inflammatory activities of Cinnamon Extract
Cinnamon, as we know from the pages on this website and the InnOrbit product page, is a popular ingredients for traditional medicines like Ayurveda and has various pharmacological activities which include anti-viral, and anti-cancer properties amongst others. In a study by Hong et al the in vivo and in vitro inhibitory effect of Cinnamon water extract on induced tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha and its underlying intracellular mechanisms was investigated in an animal model system.
Cinnamon extract were administrated and serum levels of TNF-alpha and interleukin (IL)-6 were determined 1 hour after Lipopolysaccharide stimulation. Various biomarkers were assayed for viability, cytokine expression and signaling molecules upon stimulation. Liposaccharides act as endotoxins and elicit strong immune responses in animals.
RESULTS:
The results show that oral administration of cinnamon in an animal model system significantly decreased the serum levels of TNF-alpha and IL-6. CWE treatment in vitro decreased the mRNA expression of TNF-alpha. The scientist conclude that treatment with cinnamon extract decreased LPS-induced TNF-alpha in serum and the results indicate that the observed anti-inflammatory action of Cinnamon extract may originate from the presence of polyphenols.
