Cinnamon Redux

June 21, 2011

A recent article in the Journal Food and Chemical Toxicology by  Ping et al has shown the potential anti-diabetic effect of Cinnamon – an important ingredient of InnOrbit drinks and which has been reported before on this blog.

The lowering of levels of  glucose in the blood by extracts of of cinnamon on a type 2 diabetic animal model was studied.

Cinnamon contains compounds like cinnamaldehyde, amongst other phenolics.  It was shown by the investigators that fasting blood glucose concentration was significantly decreased compared with the control group with administration of cinnamon comounds.  It was also shown that decrease in plasma C-peptide, serum triglyceride, total cholesterol and blood urea nitrogen levels.

This suggests that glucose tolerance could be improved, and that cinnamon could have a regulative role in blood glucose level and lipids, and improve the function of pancreatic islets.
