Holy Basil: significant ability to scavenge highly reactive free radicals

October 28, 2011

Holy Basil (Ocimum sanctum), a popular Ayurvedic ingredient, has been shown to have  significant ability to mop up highly reactive free radicals.  An article published by Life Science suggested that Holy Basil could be useful in maintaining health and in treatments for various medical conditions.

Extracts (in vitro) demonstrate anti-lipidperoxidative activity at very low concentrations. In vivo, hypercholesterolemia-induced erythrocyte lipid peroxidation activity was inhibited by Holy Basil extracts.  It was also shown to provide significant liver and aortic tissue protection from hypercholesterolemia-induced peroxidative damage.

Holy Basil extract shows significant liver protection activity;

Ursolic acid a component of  Holy Basil can induce apoptosis (programmed cell death) in cancer cells.
