N is for Neem – the “Wonder Tree”

Neem (Azadirachta indica), is an evergreen tree which is widely seen in the Indian subcontinent and its products (fruit etc) are commercially available for medicines and culinary ingredients.

It is composed of  many bio-active compounds like triglycerides and large amounts of triterpenoid compounds, campesterol, beta-sitosterol and stigmasterol amongst others.

Since ancient times the Neem tree has been known as the “wonder tree” of Ayurveda.

Traditionally it has been used in Ayurvedic remedies and  is recommended for urinary disorders, diarrhea, fever, skin diseases, burns and inflammatory diseases.

Today modern research has verified the remarkable attributes of this tree.

Why is Neem such a widely used tree?

Modern research studies have discovered that it contains both alkaloids and liminoids, each with an array of medicinal properties.

For example, a liminoid compound found in Neem leaves (gedunin) has been used to treat malaria administered as a tea or herbal infusion.

While all parts of the tree are used in traditional ayurvedic formulas, there are three parts that are of particular benefit. These are the bark, the leaf and the oil.
