Green tea and recovery from Brain Injury

A major component of green tea is epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), which has strong antioxidant properties. Itoh et al, investigated the effect of EGCG on neural stem cell (NSC) proliferation around the damaged area following traumatic brain injury in an animal model.

Results indicate that consumption of EGCG pre- and post- brain injury inhibits free radical-induced degradation of Neural Stem Cells, which have the potential to differentiate into neurons and glia around the area of damage following Injury to the brain.
