Herbal medicine & the treatment of influenza

February 25, 2012

In Japan, as well as India, they have a strong tradition of using herbal medicine.  Maoto, has been traditionally prescribed to patients with influenza in Japan and contains herbs such as Cinnamon and Liquorice.

A randomized trial was conducted by a team from  Fukuoka University Hospital (Nabeshima, et al) comparison with oseltamivir or zanamivir.

Oseltamivir or zanamivir are Neuraminidase inhibitors which are a class of antiviral drugs targeted at the influenza virus, which work by blocking the function of the viral neuraminidase protein, thus preventing the virus from reproducing by budding from the host cell.

The administration of maoto granules to healthy adults with seasonal influenza was well tolerated and associated with equivalent clinical and virological efficacy to neuraminidase inhibitors.
