Natural Herbs & Spices, Slim&Fit and Stomach problems

March 1, 2012

I recently visited Olesa de Montserrat, tucked in so close to the mountain of Montserrat you are almost part of the sierra itself.  I was chatting to Nohema, who runs a clinic for various therapies, and she told me that Slim&Fit was one of her most popular InnOrbit functional drinks.  My initial reaction was that her clients wanted to lose weight or maintain a slender figure.  That was true, but only in part.  It seems that a good number of drinkers are also latching onto the fact that some of the natural ingredients are also fantastic for alieviating stomach issues e.g. feeling bloated, gases, nausea etc.

I decided to take a closer look at the ingredients and it turns out there are some interesting functionalities in there like Ginger and Amla.  And it looks like the ancient Ayurvedic Doctors were right  (like our Grandmothers!) about these natural herbs and spices.

Ginger  has been used as a medicine in Asian, Indian, and Arabic herbal traditions for many thousands of years.  Ginger has been used to help digestion and treat stomach upset, diarrhea, and nausea for more than 2,000 years.

The important active components of the ginger root are mainly phenolic compounds like gingerols and shogaols.

Medicinal Uses and Indications:

Nowadays health care professionals are recommending ginger treat nausea and vomiting from motion sickness, pregnancy, and cancer chemotherapy. It is also used as a digestive aid for a mild stomach upset.

Motion Sickness

Several studies suggest that ginger may in ameliorating symptoms of motion sickness. Sailors were actually tested in one trial and ginger seemed to reduce vomiting and cold sweating.  It is possible that Ginger produces antimotion sickness action possibly by central and peripheral anticholinergic and antihistaminic effects.

Pregnancy-Related Nausea and Vomiting

Ginger may be effective for nausea and vomiting in pregnant women when used for short periods (no longer than 4 days). Several studies have found that ginger is better than placebo in relieving morning sickness.

Pregnant women with severe vomiting who took ginger every day for 4 days reported more relief from vomiting than those who took placebo.

Chemotherapy nausea

There have been several studies that indicate that ginger reduces the severity and duration of nausea during chemotherapy.

Emblica officinalis

In an animal study results indicate that Amla extract (Emblica officinalis) possesses antisecretory, antiulcer, and cytoprotective properties.

Green Tea

Research on Green tea has been publicised widely on this website.  It looks like the Green tea polyphenol epigallocatechin-3-gallate shows therapeutic antioxidative effects in colitis. Furthermore Green Tea may offer some anti-cancer protection in the gut.

Fennel has also been shown to have a protective effect against gastric mucosal lesions and this seems to depend upon the reduction in lipid peroxidation and augmentation in its antioxidant activity.  Studies also provide evidence that natural ingredients like Fennel have additional beneficial effects and can help gastrointestinal disorders.

Liquorice extracts were studied and were found to have significant efficacy in the management of functional dyspepsia.

Natural InnOrbit drink Slim&Fit contains the above ingredients and more!
