Hibiscus and Liver Protection

March 18, 2012

Hibiscus (Malvaceae) has been used for the treatment of jaundice in traditional medicine systems in India for many centuries.

Samuel et al, evaluated the hepatoprotective (liver protection) activity of Hibiscus against anti-tubercular drug induced hepatotoxicity.

The conclusion of their work was that extracts of Hibiscus have potentially potent hepatoprotective activity, thereby justifying its claim by traditional practitioners in systems like Ayurveda.
