Herbs & Spices and Gastro Intestinal disorders

March 24, 2012

Results of a study by Zaidi et al, revealed anti-inflammatory and cytoprotective effects of several medicinal plants which may endorse their traditional use (Ayurveda) in Gastro Intestinal disorders associated with Helicobacter pylori.  Furthermore, results obtained may lead to possible future candidates of chemoprevention against peptic ulcer or gastric cancer.

Extracts of several herbs, among them, Chinese Cinnamon (Cinnamomum cassia), Mint (Mentha arvensis),  exhibited strong inhibitory activity against IL-8 secretion.  Through biochemical processes IL-8 is secreted – it is an important mediator of the immune reaction.

Among the other plants examined against Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) generation was Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare).  Fennel demonstrated significant suppression of ROS from Helicobacter pylori-infected cells.

These herbs are key functional ingredients in several InnOrbit drinks like SLIM&FIT.
