Green Tea Polyphenolics: Offer protection against various chronic diseases
Quercetin and epigallocatechin gallate are polyphenols found in dietary plants, including green tea.
Polyphenols of this nature are linked to their ability to interact with cell membranes.
The aim of the present study by Margina et al, was to assess the effect of these polyphenols on a cell membrane’s directional properties.
Results showed that quercetin and epigallocatechin gallate, after 20 minutes cell exposure, change cell membrane properties which correlated with the reduction of lipid peroxidation.
The results suggest that the antioxidant capacity of Green Tea polyphenols is “due to their stabilizing effect on the cell membranes, thus contributing to cell protection in various chronic diseases.”
