Liquorice Component: Treatment of Obesity

April 8, 2012

Glycyrrhetinic acid is a component of the herb liquorice and has various pharmacological properties including anti-inflammatory benefits.

Adipogenesis is the process by which certain cells become adipocytes.  Adipocytes play a key role is energy homeostasis and process the largest energy reserve as triglycerol.

Novel biological activities of Glycyrrhetinic acid in adipogenesis were identified by Moon, et al in a model system.  One of the key results was that the component significantly decreased lipid accumulation in maturing preadipocytes.  Their results suggest that Glycyrrhetinic acid  may be useful for the treatment of obesity.
