Herbs & Spices: An approach for Obesity

Obesity is now recognized as having serious health risk and is associated with increased mortality particularly in the west. Numerous investigations have been performed to develop new anti-obesity drugs through herbal sources.

Natural products used as medicine have been documented for many hundreds of years in traditional systems of medicine in many cultures. This review, by Vasudeva et al, focuses on various plants such as Green Tea (Camellia sinensis), Amla (Emblica officinalis) and Garcinia etc. These have been used traditionally used in Ayurvedic and other traditional medicinal systems.


The review also highlights recent reported phytochemicals found in the above plants and the various extracts of the above plants which have been successfully identified for the treatment of obesity.
