Neem: Anti-diabetic Property

Meliacinolin is a compound found in Neem (Azadirachta indica). Neem is a tree found in Asia and is used in Ayurvedic medicine – a traditional medicine. Scientists (Perez-Gutierrez and Damian-Guzman) have shown that Meliacinolin inhibited α-glucosidase and α-amylase activities.

The researchers conclude that meliacinolin can efficiently inhibit insulin resistance and oxidative stress, indicating that its medicinal properties may be due to the interaction of meliacinolin with various biochemical  targets involved in diabetes pathogenesis. α-Glucosidase and α-amylase inhibitors offer an effective strategy to lower the levels of post prandial hyperglycemia prevents the digestion of carbohydrates.
