Anti-obesity effects of Liquorice

September 18, 2012

Licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra) is a medicinal plant used in Ayurvedic medicine amongst other traditional treatments.  It is used in several herbal products made by The Wise Herb Company. One of the bioactive ingredients of liquorice is glabridin an isoflavan.

Ahn et al investigated the anti-obesity effect of glabridin and glabridin-rich extracts of Liquorice.

Data from these studies suggests that Glabridin can, amongst other positive biomarkers, effectively inhibit the generation of fat cells in animal model systems.

The results suggest that glabridin and glabridin-rich liquorice extract could be effective anti-obesity agents.
