Anti-atherosclerotic potential of gossypetin from Hibiscus

July 20, 2013

Gossypetin is a compound from Hibiscus species. Hibiscus petals are used in the handcrafted Green Tea based herbal infusions from The Wise Herb Company. It has been shown to possess antioxidant, antimicrobial, and antimutagenic activities.

Chen et al investigated the mechanism of gossypetin via its free radical scavenging activity. The inhibitory effects of gossypetin on the lipid and protein oxidation of LDL and various other assays were performed.

The results from these studies suggest that gossypetin regulated the PPAR signals, which in turn led to stimulation of cholesterol removal from macrophages and delay atherosclerosis.

These results indicated that gossypetin potentially could be developed as an anti-atherosclerotic agent.
