Neurobiological effects of the Green Tea constituent Theanine

Green Tea Black BacgroundAn increasing number of studies demonstrate the neuroprotective effects of Green Tea compounds like Theanine. These effects are shown to occur following cerebral infarct and injury amongst others. A review by Lardner on Theanine also describes improvements in cognitive function including learning and memory, in human and animal studies.

A handful of studies are beginning to examine a potential role of Theanine in attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and theoretical extrapolations to a therapeutic role for theanine in other psychiatric disorders such as anxiety disorders, panic disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), and bipolar disorder are discussed.
