Ginger: Prevention of Hypertension and Cardiovascular diseases

July 31, 2013

A study by Akinyemi et al investigated the inhibitory effect of aqueous extracts of varieties of ginger on a key enzyme linked to hypertension (angiotensin I-converting enzyme [ACE]), and various other biomarkers in an animal model system.

Results revealed that Ginger extracts inhibited ACE in a dose-dependent manner.  These results suggests that the possible mechanism through which ginger exerts its antihypertensive properties may be through inhibition of ACE activity and prevention of lipid peroxidation in the heart.

The results suggest that the above cardiovascular protective properties of ginger could be attributed to their polyphenol contents.

Ginger is a key ingredient in the Handcrafted herbal green tea infusions of The Wise Herb Company.
