Green Tea: Epigenetic Cancer Prevention Mechanisms in Skin Cancer
Epigenetics: The development and maintenance of an organism is orchestrated by a set of chemical reactions that switch parts of the genome off and on at strategic times and locations. Epigenetics is the study of these reactions and the factors that influence them. (University of Utah, Genetic Science Learning Center)
Cancer prevention treatments derived from natural dietary sources could have a positive implication on cancer cell survival. The mechansims of this are probably modulated by epigenetic processes. A study conducted at the University of Maryland School of Medicine (Saha et al) reviewed the key epigenetic factors, amongst them Green Tea polyphenols were evaluated.
The review concludes that: “These studies indicate that diet-derived chemopreventive agents modulate DNA methylation status and histone modification via multiple processes and point to additional areas for study of epigenetic mechanisms in skin cancer”
Organic Green Tea is used as a base in The Wise Herb Company‘s herbal infusions.
