Liquorice and Anti-viral activity
Glycyrrhiza glabra (licorice / liquorice) were identified as plant species with an accumulation of constituents that show 3D similarities to known influenza inhibitors (NAIs). Work by Grienke et al suggests that various compounds displayed showed antiviral activity, most likely caused by the inhibition of NA. Of these, compounds various were highly ranked in shape-focused virtual screening.
These studies may well support what ancient medicinal doctors were seeing with natural herbal treatments for colds and flu.
