Ginger component: Preventive activity against obesity
Two types of Ginger were investigated for a component – 1′-acetoxychavicol acetate (ACA) – which is naturally obtained from Ginger rhizomes and seeds. Ginger is noted for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.
Ohnishi et al, investigated the anti-obesity effects of the ginger component ACA in adipocytes in an animal model (fed a high fat diet).
The ginger component was shown to significantly decrease in the activity of GPDH in 3T3-L1 adipocytes without eliciting cell cytotoxicity, and it inhibited cellular lipid accumulation.
The results show that ACA from Ginger exerts anti-obesity activities both in vitro and in vivo and suggests that ACA may have a novel preventive activity against obesity and possibly other metabolic diseases.
